Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math

STEAM teaching and learning is a shift in mindset from separated subject areas to integrating learning in a more meaningful way. Our students are preparing for jobs that have not been envisioned yet. They will use technology we have only dreamed about. The days of memorization of facts have past. They will use information to innovate new ideas to fit society’s quickly changing needs.

The STEAM mindset encourages students to discover how to use science, technology and math to solve real world problems. Creativity is required with the ability to look at problems in new ways. Communication, including reading and writing, is a vital skill in today’s connected environment. Collaboration will be the path to solving some of our biggest issues. The ability to combine all of these skills is found within STEAM related learning.

Just as students are shifting learning styles, teachers will adjust to 21st Century needs. Teachers have many hats to wear in the classroom already. Professional development is only one of the many requirements. I work with teachers as they are working to implement STEAM. Teachers develop plans which will work in their classroom, with their students. I am currently researching why some teachers find STEAM challenging to implement and why other teachers seem to naturally find ways to integrate the subject areas. I would like to know what support teachers need to make this shift.
